Peel Castle stands as a bastille to Manx history, looming majestically upon the rocky islet of St Patrick’s Isle for over one thousand years. The fortress offers a captivating look into ancient Manx life from the time of the Christian missionaries and Viking warriors to the Earls of Derby and the English monarchy. It has served as a stronghold for kings, rulers, soldiers, prisoners, peasants, priests, and royalty alike, providing refuge and safety from potential invaders.
First used as a place of worship, the castle later became a military stronghold and political base for the Viking King Magnus Barelegs of the Norse who built it in the eleventh century. The impressive red sandstone walls of the castle remain intact today, and a stroll through its grounds and the audio guided tour provide an insight into its fascinating past. Look out for the seals and basking sharks which can sometimes be seen in the Irish Sea from the castle walls.
From the 10th century grave of the 'Pagan Lady' with her Viking necklace and the cache of silver coins dating from around 1030, to the Round Tower and 13th century Cathedral of St German, to the 18th century prisoners who were sent to the castle's dark dank crypt as punishment for crimes against God such as breaking Sunday masses or witchcraft.
Peel Castle is one of Britain's most ancient fortifications to still be standing today, with much evidence of its past inhabitants still embedded within its very walls. Amongst its many occupants for more than a millennium, Peel Castle holds its own ancient mysteries. Come and experience its unique atmosphere and explore its fascinating story, where layer upon layer of Manx history is waiting to be discovered. Who knows what secrets you might uncover?

The majestic Castle Rushen, located in the heart of Castletown, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the British Isles. This 13th-century fortress has served as a royal residence to the Kings and Lords of Mann, a prison, a mint, and even a refuge from the Siege of Robert the Bruce.
Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, providing visitors with the opportunity to explore its many rooms and towers. Those who visit can also take part in guided tours of the castle, with knowledgeable staff providing insight into its history and architecture.
As you walk over the drawbridge into Castle Rushen, you will feel the weight of its ancient walls. Descending the regal stone steps, you will find the impressive Gatehouse and its garderobe (private chamber) tucked away off the main hall. Meanwhile, in the Presence Chamber, visitors can marvel over the exquisite tapestries. Throughout the rooms, historical statutes depict stories of what life would have looked like in medieval times.
Re-enactments and festivals also take place throughout the year, and visitors can dine with the kings and lords of Mann in the great banqueting hall, take in the sights and sounds of a medieval kitchen, and view the stunning panoramic views out to sea from the castle’s ramparts.
